Our Story

Alice and I both worked for the same company when we first met. The first time I heard about her it was at a friend's birthday party. Everyone had good things to say about her, and as soon as I ask about her I was told, “Don’t even bother, she is out of your league”. {Alice: I had first heard of 'Julio' from a friend who told me he was a very nice guy. At the time I had said, "not interested", because we worked at the same company.}

First time we met she was coming out of a concert with a friend. We exchanged a frosty but polite hello and that was it. She was nice but she felt a million miles away. {Alice: I was very tired that evening}

A few months after I joined the company dragon boat team and by chance she was on the team. We slowly started to get to know each other. I realized that she was everything that everyone was saying and more. After every practice, I found opportunities to talk to her a little bit more on walks to the skytrain. At that point it was clear for me that she was not one to say yes to a date. {Alice: Every walk to the skytrain Julio always repeated the same question "do you enjoy dancing?". I dodged the question every time.}

On the last day of the season, after our final competition, I pulled together all the courage that I had and invite her for coffee. It was the first time that we were completely alone. We exchange a couple of stories about our families, our travels and, without even noticing, we had spent hours sitting in the Starbucks. I knew by then that I wanted to know more about her. {Alice: We would have continued talking had a barista not come by and apologize that they will be closing. We had started the conversation about 3.5 hours prior!}

After a few weeks, I devised a strategy to ask her out. I found the perfect excuse, one that not even she can reject - shopping for kids’ gifts! We had a nice evening shopping, followed by dinner and a movie. To get her home we took a taxi. Lucky for me, we had the most questionable driver ever; he was not able to close the taxi windows, which gave me the perfect excuse to hug Alice during the ride. Early in the shopping, I put my sunglasses in her purse and conveniently forgot to get them back which allowed me to ask for a second date. {Alice: Julio radiates heat and is still my heat source whenever needed today}

After that we met again a few more times on these non-date arrangements - one was to a series of breweries and I didn't know that Alice doesn't drink beer {Alice: I had my first beer on that non-date}. I eventually asked Alice out on a real date. {Alice: The more I hung out with Julio, the more fun it became and eventually he asked me out on a date in early July 2014 where beer wasn't involved.}

La primera vez que nos conocimos salia de un concierto con un amigo y ella estaba con otra amiga. Intercambiamos un helado pero educado hola y eso fue todo. Ella era agradable, pero se sentía un millón de kilómetros de distancia. {Alice: Esa noche estaba muy cansada}

Unos meses después me uní al equipo de "dragon boat" (una especie de remo) de la compañía y de casualidad y fortuna mia, ella estaba en el equipo. Poco a poco comenzamos a conocernos. Me di cuenta de que ella era todo lo que todo el mundo decía y más. Después de cada práctica, encontré oportunidades de hablarle un poco más mientras caminabamos hacia la estacion del tren. A esas alturas estaba claro para mí que ella no iba a decir que sí a una cita. {Alice: Cada paseo a la estacion de tren Julio siempre repetia la misma pregunta "¿te gusta bailar?". Todas las veces logre esquivar la pregunta.

El último día de la temporada, después de nuestra competencia final, junte todo el valor que tenía y la invité a tomar café. Era la primera vez que estábamos completamente solos. Intercambiamos un par de historias sobre nuestras familias, nuestros viajes y, sin siquiera querer, pasamos horas sentados en el Starbucks. Sabía que quería saber más sobre ella. {Alice: No hubiesemos parado de hablar si es que no fuese por un barista que nos dijo que ya tenian que cerrar. Habíamos empezado la conversación hace unas 3,5 horas!}

Después de unas semanas, ideé una estrategia para invitarla a salir. Encontré la excusa perfecta, una que ni siquiera ella podia rechazar - ir a comprar regalos de niños! Tuvimos una noche muy agradable, seguido por una cena y una película. Para llegar a su casa cogimos un taxi. Por suerte mía, tuvimos el peor conductor que puedes desear; No era capaz ni de cerrar las ventanas del taxi, lo que me dio la excusa perfecta para abrazarla durante el viaje. Al principio de la tarde, puse mis lentes de sol en su bolso y convenientemente me olvide de perdilas, lo que me permitio pedir una segunda cita. {Alice: Julio irradia calor y aun hoy sigue siendo mi fuente de calor siempre que sea necesario}

Después de eso nos volvimos a encontrar unas cuantas veces más en estas citas-casuales - uno de estas citas fue a una serie de cervecerías y yo no sabía que Alice no bebe cerveza (Alice: La primera vez que tome cerveza fue esa vez con Julio) . Eventualmente invite a Alice a una cita real. {Alice: Cuanto más andaba con Julio, más divertido se volvía y eventualmente me invitó a salir en una cita de verdad a principios de julio 2014, donde no huvo cerveza de por medio.}
